Guest Post #2 – Holidays at the Smith house

I have to admit Halloween is my favorite holiday, but I enjoy Christmas too. I just prefer to not start celebrating until after Thanksgiving. I fully admit to being one of those people who hears Christmas music in stores in late October or early November and I want to turn around and walk back out. For everything there is a season … and I prefer my Christmastime to be during the month of December.

We’ve had to switch to using a live tree instead of a fake one. Why? Because we have cats. They’re destructive little monsters who give the best cuddles. We tried a fake tree, but when they climb into it, the branches would bend. Now we buy a live one and if they climb it, I don’t have to figure out to mend the branches for next year.

I also collect the figures from the Burl & Ives Rudolph movie, so we put those out on the mantle. The stockings hang underneath, and I have An 18” old world Santa I put up as well. Due to the furbabies, I don’t put out a lot of decorations. They end up broken. I do love to put up lights and decorations outside though. I add to my collection a little each year, so it just keeps expanding.

We open presents Christmas morning, then I make a brunch. We used to get Chinese food for dinner, as our Christmas night tradition, but I can no longer eat it. I’m not sure what we’ll do this year.

Claire can’t remember a time when writing wasn’t part of her life. Growing up, she used to write stories with her friends. As a teenager she started out reading fantasy and science fiction, but her diet quickly changed to romance and happily-ever-after’s. A native of Massachusetts and cold weather, she left all that behind to move to the sun and fun of California, but has always lived no more than twenty miles from the ocean.

 How I Learned to Write by the Seat of My Pants

Readers and bloggers often ask about my writing process—do I use an outline, write detailed character sketches, etc. The answer is a resounding “No.”

Like most of us, I was taught in English class to write outlines before starting an essay or story. So for years, I wrote outlines of stories, and then shoved the outline into a drawer and never wrote the story.

There was one story, in particular, that periodically insisted I write it. It was about platonic friends—a female therapist and a male lawyer—who have an anonymous common enemy. Said enemy is not only threatening them, but s/he is going after their loved ones as well.

So I wrote an outline. And I even wrote the first three chapters. And then life happened and my interest in the story faded. A few months later, I got out the outline, revised it and wrote another chapter. A year or two later, I revised the outline again and wrote chapter five.

This went on for 15 years! But I never got past Chapter 5. I would redo the outline, edit the first few chapters, and then back into the drawer it went.

Finally, after I retired from my career as a therapist myself (hey, write what you know), I sat down one day, intending to, once again, rewrite the first chapter. I’d had what I thought was a brilliant idea for a different opening.

Something took over and I wrote almost nonstop for six weeks, and the first draft of my first completed book was done (now Book 1 of my Kate Huntington series).

And I never once looked at the outline during those six weeks.

That was when it dawned on me that the outlines were the problem! Once I’d written the outline, the story was told. I’d lost interest in actually fleshing it out.

I realized that I am what is called a pantser in the writerly world. I write by the seat of my pants.

And I am not alone. Quite a few authors are pantsers (as opposed to plotters; the ones who adore outlines). We’ve learned the hard way that our muses must be unfettered in order to produce a steady flow of words.
