Goon

by Glenn Erick Miller

Genre: YA Fiction

When super-sized foster kid Goon causes a devastating accident, he’s sentenced to an experimental detention center in rural Florida. There, despite his efforts to go unnoticed, his size and sensitivity make Goon a perfect mark for the resident bully.

Assigned to work at the stables, he connects with the rescued horses and his co-worker Trudy, who is entangled in the center’s mysterious past. After Goon suffers a brutal attack, he must confront his tormentor, a raging hurricane, and his own crushing guilt.

GUEST POST

Can you, for those who don't know you already, tell something about yourself and how you became an author?

While in college, I volunteered as a tutor in a local school. I loved the experience and have been working in the field since. Over the years, I’ve been a youth program coordinator, an adult education instructor, and a college professor. I’m inspired by the people with whom I get to work. Their stories have made their way into my fiction in multiple ways.

Though I’d written a lot before this, it was working with young people that really sparked a sense of purpose in my writing. As a young reader, I was drawn to “Johnny Tremain,” “Catcher in the Rye,” and the Matt Christopher books about kids playing sports. I related to those characters as they struggled to fit in and faced numerous challenges.

When I began my career in education, my writing naturally gravitated toward similar tales. I saw myself in the students I taught and counseled—their awkwardness and angst were so familiar to me. So, my past, present, and future all kind of came together in a moment when I said, “Yes! These are the kind of stories I want to write!”

What is something unique/quirky about you?

I am one of eight children. The oldest is my sister. She’s followed by seven boys! I’m #6 of 8.

What are some of your pet peeves?

I don’t like clutter. I’m not a neat freak, but when there’s a lot of ‘stuff’ around me, I find it difficult to relax or focus. Also, the older I get, the more sensitive I am to noise. I prefer silence most of the time, whether I’m in the car or writing.

Where were you born/grew up at?

I was born in Clinton, NY, a small village in Central New York. It’s in the Mohawk Valley, along the historic Erie Canal. I spent my first 40 years in the area, attending colleges a few hours away and working in nearby cities. Every summer, my family would go camping in the Adirondacks just to the north. We didn’t have a lot of money, so camping was our vacation. I didn’t leave the state until I was eighteen, always worked through college breaks, and didn’t go to Disney World until I had kids of my own. I didn’t really know any better—it was just how life was for us, and I’m so grateful for having grown up with a strong work ethic and close family connections.

If you knew you'd die tomorrow, how would you spend your last day?

Ooh, that’s a depressing question, but an easy one to answer. I would definitely want to be with my wife and kids. We’d play board games and cook and take the dogs for walks.

What kind of world ruler would you be?

Being part of a big family, I learned the importance of sharing early on. We didn’t have a big house or much money, but we got along well because we had to. So, if I was a world leader, I’m sure I’d be pretty liberal. I’d tax the rich and make sure everyone had food, safe housing, excellent schools, good-paying jobs, and green spaces to visit. I’d travel around the country and meet a lot of people. I’m a really good listener! That part would be a blast.

What do you do to unwind and relax?

I don’t usually look forward to exercising, but I always end up feeling relaxed after a walk or a bike ride. I also read a lot. When I’m not reading, I enjoy watching sports and movies. I also enjoy playing some piano and guitar, though I’m a little rusty at the moment.

When did you first consider yourself a writer?

Though I’ve enjoyed writing since elementary school, it wasn’t until I got a short story published that I really felt like a writer. That validation from a respectable publication really boosted my confidence. I deal with imposter syndrome to this day, but that feeling is lessening with time and practice.

Which of your novels can you imagine made into a movie?

I’m a visual writer, and I often listen to movie soundtracks when I write. So, I can imagine both my YA novels (“Camper Girl” and “Goon”) as movies. I think each of them have strong visual qualities that would translate well to the screen. I haven’t thought about what actors would play what roles, but I can clearly picture the aesthetic, from clothing to interior spaces to landscapes. In the extremely unlikely situation that this happens, I’d love to be a part of the process.

As a writer, what would you choose as your mascot/avatar/spirit animal?

For a college art project, we had to blindly choose from the Medicine Cards deck. I drew the turtle card, and I’ve thought of that as my spirit animal ever since. Similarly to the famous fable, I believe in the benefits of slow and steady work. It’s how I prefer to tackle a writing project. Persistence pays off. To play on the analogy a bit more, I feel akin to turtles in that they have a shell to ensure self-preservation. From a young age, I’ve found that I have to withdraw from others in order to find peace. I definitely have introvert energy, and my “shell” is useful when I get overwhelmed with the noise of the world.

I encourage everyone to try this out. Connecting with an animal, even if you don’t believe in the spiritual aspect of it very much, can be really helpful as a guide toward self-understanding. Any type of personal introspection (like the Myers-Briggs surveys) is a great way to learn about how we as individuals best work in society. Understanding ourselves helps us when we have to make important life decisions about things like careers or working through a challenging time.

Wesley Gray

Aurora’s, London

Friday 17th June

Wesley Gray was a very rich man. And that made him very happy.

He’d spent the first 20 years of his life grafting hard, right up until he found himself in the world of financial banking. Specifically, as a hedge fund manager. From there, it was a cutthroat rise to the top. And he wasn’t ashamed to say he’d screwed a fair few people along the way.

But that was the beauty of being so filthy rich. He didn’t need to worry about shit like that anymore.

He could do what he wanted, when he wanted. And on Fridays, he wanted to be sitting at his regular table at Aurora’s, Soho’s chicest restaurant. Known for its flamboyant history as a former brothel, Aurora’s was an exclusive club for the mega-rich.

Which is exactly where he was.

It wasn’t a big place, but it was still decadent in every way imaginable, with tables spaced far enough apart that multi-million-pound business deals could be discussed without the risk of being overheard. It was famed for its extensive drinks list with wines from all around the world, some of which were almost a hundred years old. And the best part? The Michelin-star, world-renowned chef in the kitchen delivering a fresh menu every week.

The room was accented with deep red walls, plush leather chairs, and artwork from the latest talent London had to offer. It was full, as it always was. It took months to get a table at Aurora’s.

But Wesley Gray had a permanent reservation.

Second table along, at the front. Far enough away from the door that he wouldn’t be disturbed, but close enough that he didn’t feel like he was at the back of the room.

The waiters all knew him.

He tipped generously, so they knew to anticipate his every whim.

Now in his fifties, Wesley Gray had long since retired. If retired was even the right word. Sure, he owned London’s largest investment firm that spanned multiple continents and had huge offices in all the major worldwide cities; New York, Singapore, Hong Kong, and San Francisco to name a few. They were just his favourites, and he visited them all regularly, mostly for pleasure, not business.

Turns out when you’re not chained to a desk from 6am to 9pm, there’s a lot of pleasure out there in the world. A lot of women who would happily throw themselves at him. And he didn’t even need to treat them well.

Opposite him sat his latest conquest. She was tall, long-legged, and had black chin-length hair. He’d surprised himself really, because normally he was into big-boobed blondes, but this one had practically fallen into his lap at the fundraiser gala on Tuesday, and she was deliciously submissive in the bedroom.

The waiter approached the table to take their order.

“Good evening, Mr Gray,” he said.

“My usual wine,” said Wesley Gray. “And we’ll both have the chef’s special.”

The menu didn’t offer a chef’s special. But it had become a tradition of sorts. It normally resulted in a hand-picked dish from the menu with an added flourish.

The waiter nodded, jotted the order down onto his little pad and then disappeared from the table, taking the menus with him. Another thing he liked about this place – it was old school.

No mobile phones allowed inside. Which meant no cameras. Making it the perfect place to meet with people you didn’t want to be seen with by the paparazzi. It didn’t stop them camping outside almost 24/7, but it did offer a modicum of privacy that was impossible to get anywhere else.

Less than five minutes later, another waiter appeared at the table carrying the already uncorked wine. He showed Wesley Gray the bottle and poured it into the wine glasses on the table. Normally, Wesley Gray would be offered the courtesy of tasting the wine before being poured an entire glass.

He glanced up at the waiter and realised that it wasn’t a face he recognised. In fact, it was a perfectly neutral face, the kind you forgot almost instantly after seeing it. The waiter didn’t smile or acknowledge him in any way. He simply finished pouring and paused as Wesley Gray brought the wine to his lips and took a sip. Then the waiter gave a small nod of his head and left.

Frowning, Wesley Gray took another sip of the wine, wondering at the strange behaviour. It tasted perfectly fine. Not that he was a wine connoisseur by any means, he just liked the feeling of power that came from buying expensive things.

Glancing across the table, his date looked bored. Her eyes were flitting around the room, clocking the different faces sitting at the tables, and he immediately regretted bringing her. But there was nothing he could do about it now.

He opened his mouth to speak, but a wave of dizziness overcame him and he gripped the arm of his chair. His breath came in frantic pants and the glass of wine slipped from his fingers, spilling on the plush cream carpet as he gasped for air.

Desperately, he pushed his chair away from the table in an attempt to stand up, but he couldn’t breathe. By now, restaurant-goers were turning to stare at the commotion, and several waiters rushed forward to assist as he fell to the floor.

“Someone call an ambulance!” shouted his date, horror written all over her face.

But it was too late.

Wesley Gray was dead.

I’m a book-loving, writing enthusiast. I love to travel, drink tea and pet every animal I meet. When I’m not elbow deep in the writing world, you can usually find me being silly and having fun with my young son.

GUEST POST

Can you, for those who don't know you already, tell something about yourself and how you became an author?

I took a series of slow steps to become an author.  I began my career as a journalist.  Then I got into writing and directing TV drama and films. Finally, I took the plunge into becoming an author  by writing children’s book. I then progressed to thrillers.

What is something unique/quirky about you?

I don’t have a nail on my right little toe. It was taken off when I was a kid in the mistaken belief that its removal would stop me walking like a duck. Unfortunately, it was only a partial solution.

Tell us something really interesting that's happened to you!

When I was younger, I hitchhiked around Italy with my girlfriend and ran out of money when I arrived in Pisa --- home of the leaning tower.  As night drew in,  we were approached by a guy in a car who offered to put us up overnight. Being naïve I decided it was safer that we did this instead of sleeping in the local park, which was known to be dangerous. However, when we arrived at his home --- a big apartment block --- we realized we had made a huge mistake. We turned down his offer of a shower and were taken to a bedroom that had bars on the window. Neither of us slept that night, and, lying awake I heard the man walking past our bedroom several times before stopping to listen. In the morning we refused his offer of  breakfast and rushed out of the block. In the light of day, we discovered that the large building was actually empty and run down --- his unit being the only one occupied. To this day I don’t know whether we were really in mortal danger from a serial killer or being helped out by a kind good Samaritan.

What are some of your pet peeves?

Unfortunately, the older I’ve got the more pet peeves I have accumulated, so, in answering this question, I could go on and on. However, I’ll try to keep it short. Some of my pet peeves include people who eat on public transport --- the smell of badly cooked burgers makes me want to retch; babies who cry all the time on long flights--- I know it’s not their fault but that’s really no consolation; people who throw litter on the ground; loud chewing; people who talk in movies; slow internet… I’ll stop there. I think that’s way more than enough.

Where were you born/grew up at?

I am a true cockney since I was born in London within the sound of Bow Bells.

Describe yourself in 5 words or less!

Optimistic; energetic; curious; a risk taker.

Who is your hero and why?

More heroes than hero --- people who are always kind to others

What kind of world ruler would you be?

I don’t really believe anyone should be a world ruler, as the title smacks of autocracy. We have to many power obsessed politicians.

What are you passionate about these days?

I don’t know whether you could describe it as a passion, but staying alive is something I spend a lot of time concentrating on.

What do you do to unwind and relax?

My unwinding and relaxing focuses revolves around doing as little as possible.

Do you have a favorite movie?

There are too many to just pick out one.

Which of your novels can you imagine made into a movie?

Either of my Detective Ryan mysteries – Off Season or All or None --- would also make excellent TV series.  My sci-fi Kill Code would make a good film.

As a writer, what would you choose as your mascot/avatar/spirit animal?

I choose a cat as my spirit animal since they have many of the traits I admire --- self-reliance, a willingness to explore the unknown, a balance between wildness  and domesticity, adaptability, and the desire to ignore BS from anyone.
