GUEST POST
How to find time to write as a parent?
How to find time to write as a parent has been a struggle for me for the last seven years? I am the mother of two boys that are identical twins. They keep me on my toes and drive me nuts most the time. However, there are different obstacles to hurtle each year as they grow. I even noticed that time to write changes with each year, too.
When the boys were babies I would write when they were asleep or swinging in their swings. Then as they grew I did it during nap time or when my mom would watch them so I could get some projects done. This led to having to choose between housework and writing. Most the time my mom helped me with the housework because after I got covid when the pandemic happened my health took a turn for the worse. I always seem to have chronic pain throughout my body. When I got the covid vaccine most of the pain went away. But the damage had been done and I couldn’t stand for long periods of time without excruciating pain. That led me to choose to write over chores every time, mostly.
As the boys grew and naptimes stopped, I had to figure out how to write during the time they were at school. I started my own business working as a personal assistant and book publisher through Storyteller Publisher 22, LLC during this time. This led to less time writing though but I am a slow writer, anyway. I accomplished what I could during the school hours and sometimes worked all day long on the computer. But eventually I found a balance where I was off in the evening and had a steady number of words coming out each day. This led to more family time and time to relax and do things I love in the afternoon.
One of my key things I started doing each day slash week was making lists. I would work out what I needed to accomplish each day with a buffer day on the weekend. This allowed me to focus on those tasks those days and allowed me to accomplish more things than I would if I didn’t make the list. Plus, I have a terrible memory with getting projects done that I have to have lists to keep me organized. This is something I learned from my councilor since I told her I had a tendency to procrastinate and not accomplish anything throughout the day.
Now my boys are seven years old and going to be eight in one month. Yeah, the time sure flies by when they are young. Things are easier now because they can fend for themselves. I work a little after school on projects for my business and writing if I don’t accomplish them while they are at school. This rarely goes past the supper hour, though. Then we have time to color, read, watch TV, or do anything else they want to do to decompress from the day.
The summer months are harder because they always want to go to the park. This leads to me working at different hours of the day or just putting projects on specific days. It is harder during those months but I enjoy spending time with them when they aren’t fighting. They do that a lot and it drives me crazy. Over all, it is about having an adjustable schedule and working around what the kids want to do. It really has to be flexible or you will spend more time ripping your hair out of your head.
Do you write? Do you have kids? How about you share some insights you learned in the comments about how to manage your time around kiddos?
