The Stars Behind the Story: How Astrology Shaped My Debut Novel and Podcast

Hi, I’m Jamie Magee—host of the Scheduling Fate podcast and author of the Insight series. I’m so grateful to have this space to introduce myself—and hopefully, get to know you a little better, too.

If you’re here, you’re undoubtedly a book lover—and maybe even a writer. I’d love to take a moment to share where I was before becoming an author, and why astrology, which is far from fiction, became such a powerful thread in my debut novel.

When I wrote Insight, I was a business executive and mother of two small children. But I was also an avid daydreamer who had always been drawn to the esoteric—the unseen layers of life: astrology, mythology, psychology, and spiritual symbolism—the kind of wisdom that doesn’t just explain, but reveals.

Shortly before my Saturn return (that epic turning point we all face near thirty), a vivid daydream began to haunt me. It wasn’t just a passing thought—it was a pull. A character. A world. A voice that refused to be ignored. As I followed that thread, Insight began to take shape. And what is the theme that came the most naturally in this story? Astrology. Not just as a backdrop, but as a guide. A framework. A deeper truth.

Instead of outlining characters, I started drawing up fictional natal charts. Which may sound wild if you're new to astrology—but for me, if I had a birth chart, I had the character’s life story—because each planet tells you something vital about your soul’s promise—like actors in a cosmic play.

♂ Mars, your drive and desires.
♃ Jupiter expands your beliefs and blessings.
♄ Saturn defines your boundaries and life lessons.
♅ Uranus brings the unexpected—your genius and rebellion.
♆ Neptune blurs the line between dreams and reality.
♇ Pluto? Pluto transforms—tears down to rebuild.

Every chart holds a story. Every planet, house, sign, and aspect brings in a personal plot twist.

And, yep, you have a chart, too! You’re the starring role in your one-of-a-kind natal birth chart. How the stars were aligned the moment you took your first breath at that latitude and longitude won’t repeat for over four million years—no one on Earth has your stars. How wild is that?

With those fictional charts, Insight came to life. Each character didn’t just have a backstory—they had a soul story. Their fears, strengths, obsessions, and transformations were written in the stars before the first word hit the page. I didn’t create them—I discovered them (and, honestly, I still am—they have a way of shocking me regularly!) 

Every twist in the plot, every relationship, every soul-level decision echoed a celestial rhythm. Astrology wasn’t the theme—it was the heartbeat. As the world of Insight expanded, I realized I wasn’t just telling a story... I was channeling one. It felt like a wide-open current—I could see the worlds, feel the relationships, the rush of emotions, the weight of consequence.

The first draft of Insight poured out in under three months—just over 100k words (though it was wildly edited down). That same year, three more novels followed. But suddenly, I felt like I was over my head. I wanted to spend all my free time writing (which was nearly nonexistent with little ones and a full-time career). Yet I knew I needed to summon the courage to share the story—let friends read it, find editors, beta readers, and eventually the readers who’ve become dear friends on this journey.

The books kept coming. The series webbed into sister stories and beyond. Over 22 novels have been born to date, and I still feel like I’ve only scratched the surface of this world that Insight opened up.

At its core, Insight is driven by questions that astrology helped me explore:
What if you aren’t broken? What if you’re becoming? What if everything you’ve felt too deeply, feared too much, or sensed before it happened… was written in the stars?

Willow, the main character, is deeply empathic. She doesn’t just sense energy—she absorbs it. Her dreams blur dimensions. And her deepest fear? That she’s too different to truly belong.

The more I wrote, the clearer it became: this story was a reflection of everything I’d lived and studied. Astrology gave me a way to understand Willow. To understand myself. And explore the idea that we all carry a blueprint—not one that limits us, but one that helps us find our way.

After the book came out, I knew I needed a space to keep the conversation going. That’s why I launched the Scheduling Fate podcast.

Each week, I break down the current astrology in a practical and grounded way—no complex jargon, just real talk about what you’re feeling and why. Where the book explores soul truths through story, the podcast offers real-time guidance. Emotional patterns. Divine timing. How to work with your energy, not against it.

I’ve heard from so many readers and listeners who see themselves in Willow’s journey—or who’ve had a lightbulb moment from something we explored on the show. That’s the magic of this work. It reminds us we’re not random. We’re not broken. And we’re not alone.
