*Book Tour & Giveaway* Courting Chaos Series by Heather Young-Nichols-GUEST POST
First I want to say thank you for having me here today! I’m Heather Young-Nichols and I write contemporary and paranormal romance with lots of snark and lots of steam.
Today I decided to discuss something that authors are asked pretty often.
Where does my inspiration come from?
The short answer is everywhere. Ideas come to me and sometimes I don’t even know where they came from. But sometimes, I do.
With Highest Bidder, a story about a college student who decides to sell her virginity to pay tuition, I read an article about a young woman from South America (I believe) who was doing that very thing to help with her mother’s medical bills. The idea nagged at me. I began to wonder… would people really do that? I found out the answer was yes but as I looked into it, Flannery formed in my mind. College is so expensive and more and more young adults have to be creative in their ways to come up with the money.
Another example would be Last Good Thing. I remember this one distinctively. I was driving and the song Grand Theft Autumn/Where Is Your Boy by Fallout Boy came on. One of the scenes that made it into the book immediately formed in my head. Then I built the story around that one scene.
Courting Chaos was slightly different. Only because the series came together first then I had to figure out the stories. Though I had an idea about Cross even if he didn’t have a name at that point.
I was at a concert, All Time Low, which is always amazing. But as I watched and sang and danced, I knew I had to write a rockstar romance. All Time Low was my inspiration and more to the point, Rian Dawson was the inspiration for Cross.
This was probably just a long-winded way to say that inspiration comes from everywhere. And when I’m bogged down with my schedule, I don’t get many new ideas. It’s like my receptors are closed. Which is probably a good thing given that shiny new ideas are the number one thing to distract from what I’m supposed to be writing.
*Book Tour & Giveaway* Blood & Mud by John Baltisberager-GUEST POST
Jewish Horror
by John Baltisberger
Whenever I mention Jewish Horror, I am met with blank stares, confused faces, and admissions that my choice of genre is not one they have heard of. Sure some people will jump on the golem bandwagon, but most people seem confused that Judaism could ever enter the realm of speculative fiction. Or maybe they think religious-themed horror and literature have to be the sole domain of Christianity.
I'll tell you what I tell everyone, Judaism has been around for a very long time. Due to the diaspora which scattered the Jewish people to nearly every corner of the world, you can find Jewish themes and mythologies hidden within the folk tales of nearly every culture. And, just as importantly, you can find bits and pieces of those cultures within the greater body of Jewish folklore and mythology.
This means once you set your mind to it, Jewish speculative fiction can borrow more freely than many other forms of ethnic fiction and fantasy. The wide breadth of Jewish history, both what we know as reality and that which has fallen into legend, allows for the stories that Jewish authors write to take place in nearly any time period.
When we consider Jewish horror specifically, people tend to assume there will be nazi zombies. Again, we can remember the full array of people that have set themselves against the Jewish people throughout history, not the least different factions of Jewish people. There is no reason to be derivative, boring, or predictable.
Is the world ready for Jewish horror? Absolutely, younger readers especially crave and seek out new twists on tropes and legends they have heard before. People want to be steeped in the alien and strange while still seeing something familiar, even if it is twisted. So, through the lens of folklore and mythology that has saturated the wide world while maintaining its own peculiar flavor, we can give our readers exactly what they are craving.
