Lion
Shifters Book 5
It’s
going to be a night to remember, and not in a good way. When election
chaos combines with the storm of the century, Nairobi becomes an even
more dangerous city than usual. The lion Shifters retreat to their
Prideland, under strict orders from their king to stay at home.
Trouble
is, Isaac Kiprop was never one to follow the rules. While the other
lion Shifters settle down for a long night, Isaac has other plans:
his last burglary job for the hyena gang. After that, he’ll be
free, or so he tells himself. And he’s pretty sure he can get away
with it, until a pretty but irritating, know-it-all wolf Shifter
crashes his party and his heart.
Lara
Kraft is on a mission, one that doesn’t involve Isaac and his
never-ending efforts to push her buttons. Her research takes her into
the territory of a dangerous criminal game, and all her carefully
laid plans go awry. When Lara learns the truth about the gang’s
latest assignment, she’ll do anything to stop
them. But good intentions have a way of
getting complicated, especially when Isaac is involved.

GUEST POST
Researching
the Paranormal
I’ve
lived in Nairobi, Kenya since mid-2000. As a writer, I am fascinated
by myth, legend and all things paranormal (except zombies, because
they’re messy and dribble body parts all over the place). Up until
about a year ago, my books were set in colonial Kenya and starred a
paranormal investigator, Miss Knight. When I began considering a
series set in the twenty-first century, I decided to involve lions.
Not
surprisingly, lions hold an important place in African history,
mythology and tourism. In some cultures, the lion symbolizes power
and royalty. In parts of West and East Africa, the lion is associated
with healing and is seen as the link between the seers and the
supernatural.
The
idea of lion shapeshifters is not new in Africa. When I began
researching the topic, I found a number of African stories
referencing human-lion mixes. Njaay--the legendary founder of the
West African Waalo Kingdom--was raised by lions. He returned to his
people as a part lion, part human creature. Apedemak was another
lion-human mythological creature. A lion-headed warrior god, he was
worshiped by the Meroitic peoples inhabiting Nubia.
However,
the first reference I found to a true Lion Shifter was in the story
of Nyarvirazi.
Originally
the daughter of an East African chieftain, Nyarvirazi liked to take
strolls through the jungle. One evening, she drank from a pool of
what she thought was water. In fact, it was lion’s urine (yuck!)
collected by a witch for a magical ritual. On the way back home,
Nyarvirazi began to crave meat. She turned into a lioness and
remained in that form until she had eaten one of her father's goats.
Building
on that story, I decided her descendants would inherit a weaker
version of her curse. The partial curse allows them to shift at will.
Nyarvirazi is King’s ancestor.
Who’s
King, you ask? He’s the alpha of the Nairobi Kiprop Pride and the
future High King of the Mara-Tsavo Lion Kingdom. Yup, my new series
has a lion king…!
