GUEST POST

How I (Kinda) Relax

Armand Rosamilia

I am usually stressed about everything, real and imagined. I’ve always been on edge, and I think (in some cases) it works out for me, because it gets me going with writing deadlines and having to work on specific projects. Alas, I also wait until the last minute to finish those projects, but then I think it is my best work.

Great under pressure? Maybe. But then I need a break, too, or my fat head will explode. So…

I love to read, mostly nonfiction. I average about eighty books a year. I cannot go to sleep until I’ve read, even a few pages. It calms me down, gets my head out of my own writing, and puts me to sleep. Eventually. If the book is really, really good, I will read for a couple-three hours. Not good for my sleep but good for my mental health, I guess. I hope.

I watch a lot of Investigation Discovery true crime shows, because my wife is a fanatic. It also helps me with some ideas, since I mostly write crime thrillers and horror stories. Always working, I tell ya.

When I actually leave the house, it is usually to go to a baseball game. We’re season ticket holders to the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp, the Triple A farm team for the Miami Marlins. I’ve used the stadium, fictional staff and fans in my Dirty Deeds crime thriller series (which ties in to my First Coast Thriller Series, too) as well.

That’s about all I do when I’m not writing or promoting my books. Hopefully more live book signings will be happening, too, because I enjoy seeing new potential readers and chatting with them. No better feeling than when a person comes to your table and buys a book, chatting with me about it or any number of other random things. I love it.

I also love food, which is a good thing, since we need it to survive… but I take it to the extreme at times. One pound bag of M&M’s? I can polish it off in an hour, slumped on the couch with the bag on my giant belly. Good times.

As a writer, you’re always working in your head, even if your fingers aren’t on the keyboard. Pouring a cup of coffee or some bourbon? Usually still thinking about a story I’m working on. Searching the house for the cookies my wife hid? Still working stories out.

There are those rare moments when I’m not writing, either actually typing away or in my head, but they are truly scattered.

But would I give it up for anything? Nah. I’d rather be absent-minded and get lost in my head as much as possible, because it means I’m working on something I’m passionate about.

Writing is the best of times for me, and I wouldn’t trade it in for anything.
