*Book Tour & Giveaway* The Blood of Faeries-GUEST POST

The Blood of Faeries

The Allison Lee Chronicles Book 2

by Dan Rice

Genre: YA Urban Fantasy

Allison Lee wilts under the bright light of celebrity after being exposed as a shape-shifting monster. She'd rather be behind the camera than in front of it. Being under the tooth and claw of her monstrous mother is even less enjoyable. All she desires is for everything to go back to the way things were before she discovered her true nature. But, after she accidentally kills a mysterious man sent to kidnap her, she realizes piecing her old life back together is one gnarly jigsaw puzzle.
When Allison's sometimes boyfriend Haji goes missing, Allison and her squad suspect his unhealthy interest in magic led to his disappearance. Their quest to find Haji brings them face-to-face with beings thought long ago extinct whose agenda remains an enigma.

GUEST POST
My Author Journey
The first time I recall thinking I'd like to write books was after reading Dune by Frank Herbert. I
remember being blown away by the adventure and romance of the tale and impressed beyond words by
how he could create such an immersive world in such a slender volume. He had accomplished in a little
over 400 pages what took many writers twice that number. I was 11 or 12 at the time.
My first brush with writing stories came earlier, around the third grade. My teacher, Mrs. Far,
decided I should attend The Young Writers’ Conference. This, of course, necessitated that I write a story.
Being a third grader, I had no idea what to write about and wasn't interested in the additional academic
work. I was more interested in cartoons and Legos.
As it turned out, I had recently attended a science fair with my father where we had built a robot
together. My story for the writers’ conference was about this experience, including detailed diagrams of
the robot’s circuitry—yes, the robot was functional. You can imagine the robot as a Neolithic predecessor
to the robotic vacuums people use in their homes today.
My experience at the conference was...unencouraging. I remember being the only boy in a
classroom full of girls at a time of life when the only thing girls are good for is cooties. When it was my
turn to present my book, the audience was less than impressed. Clearly, they thought a memoir about
building a robot with your dad wasn't much of a story. The popular yarns included the stuff for fairytales
—magic, unicorns, and the like.
I didn't start seriously writing until after college when I was fortunate enough to join The Puget
Sound Writers’ Guild. Under the guidance of the group’s resident writer, I went from having no idea how
to write a novel to banging out a rough draft. Emphasis on rough. My early attempts may have contained
a coherent story, but they weren't very good.
It wasn't until I started writing short stories that my writing started improving in leaps and bounds,
and I even got a few publication credits. I had been inspired by Ray Bradbury’s quote that writing a short
story a week was bound to produce a few good stories and improve your writing. It turns out, his advice
was golden, at least for me. But my goal was never to write short stories. I wanted to pump out novels.
Armed with my improved writing skills from penning dozens of short stories, I finally knocked
out a novel worthy of publication. My debut YA urban fantasy Dragons Walk Among Us was picked up
by a small press and published in 2021, garnering some glowing reviews and even an award. The sequel,
The Blood of Faeries, is called “A fun and ferocious adventure” by Kirkus Reviews. I'm currently writing
the third book in the series for now known only as TWOM.
