GUEST POST

A Day in My Writing Life: Praneet Menon

By the time I open my eyes around 5:30 a.m., my mind has usually been going for a while. Sometimes, I’m not sure it shares in my body’s slumber from the night before.

The morning routine involves calisthenics followed by a light breakfast accompanied by some Earl Grey tea. Tea has been a staple in my life ever since my childhood in India. Once the demands of life are satisfied—family taken care of, chickens fed and watered, vegetable plot tended to, driveway plowed of snow—I traverse into the land of stories, usually around 9:30 a.m.

If the weather is nice, I prefer to walk around woods and trails, while at other times, I’ll park myself by a scenic vista. Uncooperative weather relegates me to the indoors, but I walk around my house and deck. Movement and nature, for some reason, have always played a vital role in stimulating my creativity. Magical technology allows me to simply speak into my phone as it judiciously jots down my thoughts, streamlining my writing process. In this phase of “writing,” I don’t pay much attention to format, preferring to enter the mindset of my characters and simply letting the words flow.

As noon rolls around, I’m sufficiently hungry and take a thirty-minute lunch break. I usually read a novel or watch a sitcom during this time. Lunch is followed by a few hours of editing my morning’s writing, refining drafts, or any other “sit-down” work that needs to get done. If able, I try to spend this time out in the natural splendor this world offers. The contrast between the morning’s free-flowing expression and the afternoon’s detail-oriented labor provides a perfect balance of creativity and precision that I yearn for in everything I do.

Evenings, more specifically between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m., involve dinner, time with family, and fulfilling community obligations. This paradigm shift offers a fulfilling opportunity to step away from the day’s writing, allowing me to decompress and grow in other aspects of my life.

Before bed, I’ll read a few chapters of a novel or play an action RPG. On a typical night, after watching a show with my wife, it’s lights out by 10:30 p.m. Another wonderful day in this fantastical experience awaits.

If you’re curious about the narratives that emerge from my writing routine, I invite you to check out my debut novel, The Staff of Beckoning. It’s a tale woven with the same love for our world and character exploration that inspires my writing. I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I enjoyed creating it!
