GUEST POST
Can you, for those who don't know you already, tell something about yourself and how you became an author?
What do you want to be when you grow up? That dreaded question which leads to such dichotomous childhood choices.
In my primary school days, the Hornblower series fascinated me. I tried to mimic a similar story, but as with many aspiring writers it never found completion. But what can you expect from a ten-year old? Then comes the secondary school days. I wrote morality plays which the school gave to the drama department. All this derailed when asked that fateful parental question, "what are you going to major in?" My first answer was philosophy. Wrong. The next answer—history. Wrong. Something with math was the correct answer. And so, my career was shanghaied into a very different direction.
Decades later, after much corporate success and running sports events all over the world, the inevitable restructure came and a gift from the heavens came. I was gifted the time to revisit my primary and secondary school passions: indulge in philosophy and history. As many dream of, I set out to write a novel which many have dreamed of and have not fulfilled. My corporate success genes persevered and The Matriarch Matrix hit the self-publishing market in 2017.
I initially emulated the biblical archeology history thriller genre, as it would allow the incorporation of both philosophy and history with a touch of futuristic sci-fi added in to help tell the story. But my goal was to inspire readers to deeply reflect, to challenge their assumptions about life. My alpha readers were, and still are, very successful female executives, who enjoyed the book's profound challenges to their assumptions. For in business what Jack Reacher says is true: "assumptions kill". The same applies to corporate strategies. A few reviewers truly read and understood that book. But it did inspire.
In the Matriarch Messiah, I play out the story built in The Matriarch Matrix, but have pulled back on the assumption challenge and replaced it with challenges to patriarchal created religious canons. It incorporates more of what I have learned from the Romance Writers of America seminars about writing craft and reaching the emotions of your readers. From successful corporate executive to a total sponge listening intently in the audience at RWA meetings. You'd never have expected to be that when you finally grew up.
