GUEST POST

What book do you think everyone should read?

It depends on what you're wanting. As creative types, everyone should read Stephen King's On Writing.

On a broader level, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance by Robert M. Pirsig.

There are more in-depth philosophical books out there, but this one is the most rooted in realism.

How long have you been writing?

Since I was eight, so just over 20 years, professionally, I started in 2011, and my first book Reality came out in 2012, so we'll say eight years.

Do the characters all come to you at the same time, or do some of them come to you as you write?

It ranges depending on the book. The common theme is I end up scrapping characters or merging two of them into one more complex character.

What kind of research do you do before you begin writing a book?

I do a ton of research for each book. Research is fun because it takes you down strange paths you wouldn't usually go down. I've been to my city's armoury. I've found online dating sites for prisoners. I've interviewed public service (police officers & RCMP) professionals. I've read religious scriptures and have been on academic-level biology forms to confirm details.

Research is fun because you are introduced to so many new things.

Do you see writing as a career?

I do and have turned a profit, a small one, but it is something that I put back into the next book and a good meal. My primary income is still freelancing as a graphic designer and web developer. Always, I keep looking at new methods of making writing my full-time job.

Do you read yourself and if so what is your favorite genre?

I do read a lot. Oddly enough, I read more non-fiction in the realm of social sciences and philosophy. For fiction, I do love horror, thriller, and sci-fi.

Do you prefer to write in silence or with noise? Why?

I write anywhere and everywhere. My best writing is done early in the morning, where I do put on strange instrumental music that suits the book. Lyrical music is distracting while writing.

Do you write one book at a time or do you have several going at a time?

Usually, I focus on one book. I have a number of them in various states at any given time, but they sit until I reach a milestone for a book. Those milestones can include finishing the first draft or sending it to beta readers or the editor, or while managing marketing for a new release.

What made you want to become an author, and do you feel it was the right decision?

Telling stories is my joy of writing. I've dabbled in all sorts of art forms to tell stories and still do. In my teens, I've made board games, videogames, cartoons, comics, and stop motion films – all of them were terrible, by the way. In the end, I kept gravitating to writing literary fiction because I could focus on the story and not worry about the medium's craft as much.

The advice they would give new authors?

Write a ton, and take your time. You can build your author platform without even having your first book out. Share a sample here, show something else there, but build up hype. The incubation period of not having a book out is powerful because it gives you the freedom to explore and find your voice.

If you have a book out, just keep writing and keep bringing work out. Building an audience is a long and slow process.

What makes a good story?

If the reader gets flashes of the story at obscure times after they've finished reading it. Then you know you've done your job. If they don't, the story is forgettable.

What is your writing process? For instance do you do an outline first? Do you do the chapters first?

I have dabbled in both pantsing and plotting. For a long time, I plotted, and now I am going back to pantsing. All of my short stories on my blog are pantsing, and they've felt like the most authentic work I've done. They're also the most fun.

Do you try more to be original or to deliver to readers what they want?

I guess original. I've also worked on giving the reader what they want. For the Mental Damnation series, and the Rutherford Manor series, I knew there was an audience that the stories should match with. My other works and short stories, not so much.

What's the most difficult thing about writing characters from the opposite sex?

Most of my protagonists have been female oddly enough. I have varying female beta readers to go through it because I am male. On occasion, they point something out, saying that's not really how most girls would behave.

In the end, it hasn't been difficult because I've paid attention to what people say. As writers, we should always listen keenly to what people say. Snoop in on conversations, on the bus, at a bar, or listen closer to the conversation you're having with friends/partners. Then you can adopt the voice of another sex, age, or profession.

How long, on average, does it take you to write a book?

My writing has gotten faster, I've gotten better, and have gained more confidence in the words I write. Mortal took me a year from the first outline to launch. I've done others like The White Hand or Fire, Pain, & Ruin in about eight months.

See Through
by Brittany Taylor
Genre: Rockstar Romance

Fame.

I didn't ask for it and I didn't want it. After nearly two years in the spotlight, I've learned that fame has a way of changing how the world sees you.
Somehow, my reputation had been tarnished and my manager was convinced a journalist was what I needed to show the world who I truly was.

But just like fame, I didn't ask for my story to be told. My secrets were secrets for a reason. Not even a journalist could dig deep enough to expose what I've fought so hard to protect.

Only this journalist isn't a stranger. She's the one woman I vowed to never see again. She's the one woman who saw me for who I really am.
And damn, if karma didn't have one twisted sense of humor.

Brittany Taylor grew up all over the world including places such as California, England and Texas. Today she resides in Connecticut with her husband, son and two cats. She loves reading, but loves writing even more. Her favorite things in life are her family, binge watching Netflix, and tacos.

GUEST POST

Can you, for those who don’t know you already, tell something about yourself and how you became an author?

Hi, I’m Brittany Taylor and I write sexy, edgy romance. I write everything from dark romance to suspense to rockstar. I currently live in Connecticut with my husband who is in the Navy and we have two sons, and two cats.

For most of my life I’ve lived all over the country, including places such as California and Texas. When I was a child I also lived in England!

Senior year of high school I had two free periods at the end of my day where I would spend my time assisting the librarians in stocking and re-covering the books. I feel like my time there brought out my true love for books and it wasn’t long before I found myself checking out several books a week. I gravitated toward the romance genre, specifically YA at the time.

Years later when I married my husband after he joined the Navy, we moved from Texas to Connecticut. Although I’d had gone to school to be a legal assistant and pharmacy technician, I realized my love for books was stronger than my passion for those careers. I started reading again and found myself wishing I had been the one writing those stories. It wasn’t until 2016 when my husband had bought me a new computer that I truly dove into writing my first novel, Without You.

And from there, the rest is history. I currently have six books published and am working on the seventh. I wouldn’t trade this career for any other. I love it too much.

What inspired you to write this book?

When I write books, I like to try to keep a wide variety of sub genres. I will always write in the romance genre, but I don’t particularly like to stick to just one trope.

Rockstar romance was a genre I had always wanted to write. After reading several rockstar romances myself, I started to notice that almost all rockstars were portrayed a certain way. I wanted to write my story with a fresh take. I wanted to write the rockstar romance that wasn’t particularly like the others. Therefore, Spencer Ryan was born.

What can we expect from you in the future?

Sometimes when I want to start a new book, I like to look at the last book I published and go from there. Last year when I had written my dark romance, Dissipate, I knew I needed to branch out in a different direction. Julian, the main character in Dissipate, was such a strong, psychologically draining character that I felt like I needed a break. After writing Dissipate, I wrote my co-written romantic comedy, What are the Chances.

After writing See Through, I knew I wanted to jump back into the series I had started with Dissipate. I was ready to go back to darker characters and more suspense. Last year I had published my romantic suspense, Back to Me, never intending for it to become a series. But then I wrote Dissipate and knew I wanted to write a third book into the series.

I’m currently working on Mine. Mine is a psychological thriller that will take place between the events that happened in Dissipate and Back to Me, making it Book 2 in the series. Although I’m writing Book 2 in the series, all three books can be read as standalones. Usually, I write where my heart takes me and right now, Logan and Lena are shouting at me to write their story.

Do you try to be original or to deliver readers what they want?

In the author world I feel like it’s easy to get swept up in what the current trend is in the market. For myself, I try to aim for both pleasing my readers all the while staying true to who I am as a writer. I firmly believe that if you aren’t fully invested or if your heart isn’t in your writing, your readers won’t love it either.

It’s like writer’s block, or what I like to call ‘creative lulls’. If I’m not feeling the story my characters are telling me, I put it aside and try to work on other things. I want my readers to get my best work and to love my stories. I feel like that can only happen if I write what comes from my heart and from staying true to myself.

Genre: Horror, LGBTQ

It’s the summer of 1991 and serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer has been arrested. His monstrous crimes inspire dread around the globe. But not so much for Emory Hughes, a closeted young man in Chicago, who sees in the cannibal killer a kindred spirit, someone who fights against the dark side of his own nature, as Emory does. He reaches out to Dahmer in prison via letters.

The letters become an escape—from Emory’s mother, dying from AIDS, from his uncaring sister, from his dead-end job in downtown Chicago, but most of all, from his own self-hatred.

Dahmer isn’t Emory’s only lifeline as he begins a tentative relationship with Tyler Kay. He falls for him, and just like Dahmer, wonders how he can get Tyler to stay. Emory’s desire for love leads him to confront his own grip on reality. GUEST POST

Why I Wrote The Man from Milwaukee

by Rick R. Reed

As a writer, the question I get asked more than any other is, “where do you get your ideas?” If I’m grumpy, I might snap, “From the dollar store—a buck for a dozen,” but usually, I do try to satisfy the questioner’s curiosity in a sincere way.

Why write a book centered around serial killer and cannibal Jeffrey Dahmer? The first reason that springs to mind if I’m honest is that I’ve always been fascinated by true crime and serial killers in particular. Before you get the wrong idea, I am about as mild-mannered as they come. But the psyches of twisted people have always fascinated me because I think we’re all a combination of good and evil, of angels and demons, of secrets we might not want antyone else to know. Now, for most of us, those things are, of course, not in line with homicidal leanings, but I think we can all agree that life is comprised of both shadows and light, for all of us.

My main character, Emory Hughes, is one of those people. He is the main character of the book and it’s through his unreliable eyes we see the arrest of Dahmer and why he tries to contact him in prison. He’s surprised when Dahmer writes back to him, but believes they share a bond—they’re both self-loathing homosexuals who would change if they could. In Dahmer, Emory Hughes sees a kind of peer or friend. This is how twisted his mind is and how great his hatred toward his own homosexual leanings are.

After the book describes this sick fascination shortly after Dahmer’s arrest in July of 1991, Emory writes to the killer for the first time:

Dear Mr. Dahmer,

You don’t know me, although our paths might have crossed one night on one of your visits to Chicago. But I doubt that. I’m sure I’d remember if you and I had ever been in the same room.

I wanted to take a moment and write to let you know there’s one person out here who understands what you’re going through. I fight my own demons, day after day, and know that sometimes our best intentions get crushed under the weight of needs we have no way of understanding, let alone escaping, try as we might to be good.

I know.

I know what a horrible thing it can be to be compelled to do things you know are wrong, evil, but for whatever reason, you’re built to be unable to resist these needs. I have them. To some degree, I suspect we all do. Yours are much worse than the average person, yes, but that doesn’t mean you wanted to feel the things you felt. Things that drove you to do what the papers say you did…

Anyway, if you get this letter, I’d love to hear back from you. I know right now the whole country hates you and gazes at your face with horror. But I don’t. I see a young man like myself, confused and full of pain because he can’t help being who he is.

We’re both twisted. In different ways, but I do know what you’re going through right now, believe it or not. I see you sitting in a cell, maybe relieved now that your hands have been tied, so to speak.

You can be good now.

I envy that, just a little bit.

I wish I could be good. I’ll keep trying, but it seems like the harder I battle the demons inside, the more they persist.

Anyway, if you get this (I don’t know how mail to prisoners works—I’ve never written to anyone in jail before), please take the time to consider me a friend you can talk to.

I’ll be anxiously awaiting your response.

Very truly yours,

Emory Hughes

I am a native of Texas, born and raised in a small town. I graduated from Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas in 2008 with a Bachelor's degree and from Tarleton State University in 2019 with a Master's in English and Curriculum. I currently am a full time teacher, mother, and wife.

God has put writing on my heart in order to inspire and encourage others that are currently or have experienced similar tribulations in life. My hope is that my stories will give others hope and comfort through the trials they face throughout their lives.

My first story, Lonely Road of Faith, is inspired by real-life events and me and my husband's broken paths that eventually led back to each other and to God.

GUEST POST

My name is Merideth Deeds and I was born and raised in a small town in central Texas called San Saba. I am 33 years old and am married with an 8 year old son and a 2 year old daughter.

I have a bachelor’s from Texas A&M University and have a Master’s from Tarleton State University which focuses in English.

I currently teach high school English.

I am passionate about my family and my faith. I believe each and every one of us was put on Earth for a reason and to serve a purpose. I believe God has called me to write simply to inspire others who have lived a life of sin and are searching for answers and needing hop.

Lonely Road of Faith is me and my husband’s love story which also includes our broken roads that led us back to each other.

It is also features various other struggles of life that many can relate to such as single parenthood, co-dependency, and most of all, the pain and journey of loving an alcoholic or addict. Being raised in a small town it also gives the reader an idea of what it is like to grow up in a small community where everyone knows everyone.

I have no doubt that Lonely Road of Faith would be an awesome film. The name of the book comes from a Kid Rock song that my husband said was our song when we were teenagers which is entitled “Lonely Road of Faith.”

My favorite part of this novel is the real dialogue that I included. At times, when I reread it, my eyes tear up and it is as if I instantly time travel back to those beautiful moments I treasure so much with my grandmother who passed away in 2011.

I also love going back in time in my mind and remembering my now 38 year old husband as a 19 year old college kid and how simple life was back then, even though at the time, it felt so complicated.

Almost every character in the novel is based on a real person I know or is a part of my life.

Since I teach a lot of literature in the high school, I have the chance to read a lot of novels over and over again. I love Ernest Hemmingway and one of my favorite novels is The Great Gatsby. I actually make a reference to it in this novel.

This novel took me three years to write and it truly comes straight from my heart. It was as if the pages just wrote themselves and flowed out of me. My hope is that this novel will inspire you as it tells the story of what it is like to love an alcoholic and the overall journey of living a life full of sin, yet, finally finding your way back to your roots and to God.

It features raw and real testimony of both me and my husband and writing the story took a lot of courage, but I know it was what God wanted me to do.

I think that good writers make the reader search their own hearts and ponder on the deeper truths of life that are not always so simple or visible to the eye. I believe in angels and I believe in demons, and I believe that throughout our lifetime, we will always face a battle that we cannot even see going on around us.

If my novel was to become a film, the main character of Billy Denham would have to be some handsome, charismatic, rough, and tough actor. I really cannot even think of one off the top of my head.

The novel begins with my journey of single motherhood and having to move back to my small town. There, I am able to reconnect back with my family and begin the road to forgiveness and transforming my life as I put it back together piece by piece. And while back home, I run back into my high school boyfriend unaware of the demons that he is facing. It is a story of loss, love, bad times and good times. It is a good depiction of how our lives really are roller coasters full of life coming into the world and life leaving it; many highs and many lows.

Something interesting about me is that when I was 8 years old I believe I saw an angel in the house I grew up in. After that, I was so terrified of seeing something so surreal and supernatural that I have never slept without at least 2 night lights in my room. I am strong in my faith and my heart is very compassionate for others as well as animals. I have two miniature donkeys, two horses, three dogs, one cat, 2 fish, and a Shetland pony.

I am an open book and with that comes vulnerability, however, I believe that in a cruel world of chaos and fakeness, being real and kind to others is truly the way we should strive to be on a daily basis.
