Beastly Behavior and Appearance
By Rachel Rossano
My beastly hero bears many traditional aspects of his role. Scarred, maimed, and emotionally burdened, he comes to the page looking like one would expect for the Beast in Beauty and the Beast. However, he is very unbeastly in many aspects also. Unlike the Disney version, Silas is not mean, selfish, or petty. His intimidating behavior, glares and grimaces, come from a powerful man who is intensely introverted. Few dare to confront him about his behavior.
In contrast to his outward posturing and appearance, Silas is a good master to his people, seeing to their provisions, housing, and all the duties of a good overlord. Despite the rumors, it quickly becomes clear that Silas isn’t as beastly as his reputation indicates. However, he isn’t faultless. If anything, he is awkward, distracted, absentminded, and prone to act indecisively at times which causes all kinds of issues.
