a child, Cherié Summers, dreamed of being a writer. And it's in her
dreams that Ms. Summers finds inspiration. At age eighteen, a dream
she had about her favorite rock star, Billy Idol, turned into her
first novel, A Melody for Adrian. But, Ms. Summers didn't get serious
about publishing that novel until she turned fifty. Six years later,
she has seven published books to her name.
Writing
is only one of Ms. Summers' creative passions. She is also an avid
photographer, specializing in portrait photography of animals,
nature, and people. Another creative outlet she revels in is belly
dancing. She teaches the art of Middle Eastern dance through her
local community education program. She also enjoys traveling to music
concerts and pop culture conventions with her daughter, Kayla.
Atlanta is a favorite destination, and Ms. Summers' dream is to move
there when she retires from her day job.
Start
the Fire began
as A Melody for
Adrian. In fact,
my first three books used to have different titles. And covers. What
changed? How I published them. In January of 2021, I was given the
rights back to my first four books. So much had transpired in the
world and in my knowledge and skills as I writer, that I felt it was
the perfect time to make some changes.
By
2021, I had discovered that self-publishing could bring me greater
success as a writer. I had total control from start to finish and if
the book wasn’t selling, I only had myself to blame. My other book
series, Love
and Lush,
was my first venture into self-publishing and was outselling my Love
on Fire series.
So, I knew I wanted to put Love
on Fire back
out there, but on my terms.
I’d
also realized that my covers were not attracting readers, and neither
were the titles (The former titles made sense to me as the writer,
but no one else). Last winter, I created new covers and new titles
for the first three books. It wasn’t easy. I was torn between
throwing some hot guy on the front (as most romance books seem to
have) or use a photo of a couple since the books were dominated so
much by this power couple of Adrian and Melody. I decided on photos
that directly reflected what was happening in the storylines and
featured both a guy and girl. As for the titles since book four was
titled Through the Fire, I decided to have every title
mention something about fire. The result was a very cohesive looking
series. You know these books belong together. For Through the
Fire’s new cover, I decided on a new version of Kat, one that
fit the description of my character. Hearts
Ignited also does the same with Buzzy.
My
former publisher told me that I could not release the version of the
books that they published. This was okay with me. I’d grown as a
writer and knew I could go back into those manuscripts and make the
stories even better. I cut out overused words. I rephrased
things. Burned by the Fire shortened by about four
thousand words. The best part is, hindsight being 20/20, I could go
in and foreshadow events that were going to come up later in other
books. And one big change? I was told previously told NOT to name
drop a character and band from my other series into this series
because they have nothing to do with one another (I even argued that
being musicians they live in the same world) So guess what I did?
NAME DROP!
A
world event that affected my edits was the Me, too movement.
As a survivor of sexual abuse, my books contain themes of abuse in
them. There is a scene in Start the Fire that I was
worried would turn off readers even though that event comes up again
in later books and becomes part of an even larger discussion on
abuse. Being able to go back in and make new edits allowed me to NOT
change the scene but change the reaction characters have to it. Kat
especially, is affected by it, and Adrian feels greater remorse than
he did in the first version of the book.
Now
that the first four books have been rereleased, I’m seeing more
book sales which is encouraging me to stay on this writing journey.
My publisher gave me my start, and for this, I will always be
grateful, but sometimes, you have to let go and move on to better
things.
