How do you research a book?
I like to think that writers are eavesdroppers and undercover agents, kind of like detective, who get their ideas from many sources. In my world, there are several kinds of research that writers can do. The first kind takes place every day when you walk out the front door. The world around us provides great sources of information. Open your writer’s eyes and ears. What do people say? What do their actions tell you? Do their words match their deeds? .
Then there’s the more formal process of online and library research. Over the past decade things have gotten so much easier. Treks to the library can be kept to a minimum as we troll the internet instead of the card catalog. As a fiction writer, I find that facts much still be accurate to support the logic of the story. That’s why I often find myself digging for information on legal procedures, government agencies policies, and how businesses operate and many other fact-based topics.
Finally, I want to mention that there’s a reason why authors have been known to credit librarians in the acknowledgements at the back of their books. A friendly librarian can save a writer hours and days of digging by pointing out little known sources. In addition, many large public libraries have databases of journals articles that are all free for those with a library card.
I enjoyed reading how you research info for your book and your book sounds great! Thanks for sharing and good luck with The Shaman's Gift and the tour!
ReplyDeleteAs I wrote this book, it felt like an escape from last year's brutal lock down. As I did my research, I took me away to a different world. Having spent time In Central America, I felt the story and the characters come alive and when the book was finished, I was sorry to leave them behind.
DeleteLooks like an exciting book.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the contest.
Readers have told me that they could picture The Shaman's Gift as a film. The main character, Carrie finds herself immersed in many worlds: the jungles of Belize, ancient culture of the Maya, and the crazy lifestyle of a tech millionaire on the run and a surprise romance. Loads of action!
