Let’s
Talk Pets
As
a kid I wanted to be a vet. I drew animals (mainly cats), played with
stuffed animals instead of dolls, and kept adopting critters, much to
my parent chagrin. We had many cats, a few dogs, and fish but that
didn’t stop my from catching frogs, lizard, or snakes.
Once
while I was in middle school, we went ice skating on the pond behind
our home. I kicked something. Looking down, I found an American
bullfrog. I picked him up and took it home. He wasn’t dead and
thawed out in the bathtub. I haven’t a clue why he came out of
hibernation. My mother was none too pleased to have a frog in the
bathroom.
Our
vet made house calls since we had many pets. We came home from an
evening out and found my cat Speckles cat-loafing outside waiting for
us. I picked him up and he yowled like I’d never heard before. He
had cuts to the bone on his both legs. We speculated that he had
climbed into an engine to keep warm and became injured. We called the
vet who came immediately. My mother, knowing my interest in the
becoming a vet, had me assist the doctor. I held my cat’s leg up so
he could clean the wound. I had to look away because my heart was
breaking (and I was almost sick). I decided I was too emotional to be
a vet.
As
an adult, I continue to rescue animals. I remember the first year of
my marriage I screamed for my hubby to pull over. I jumped out of the
car and ran to a frog in the middle of a two lane highway. As a
little dancing, I caught the slippery sucker and took him to a remote
lake where he couldn’t play a game of real life Frogger.
I
still collect strays. I don’t have any puppies right now, but three
unique kitties. My solid black cat was a neighborhood stray we
rescued. Our orange tabby we adopted from a shelter and the Bengal
kitten my daughter took in when someone moved where they couldn’t
have pets. They all have very distinct personalities just like
people. The tabby is more like a dog than a cat. He fetches, walks on
a leash, and lays with his legs stretched out. The kitten parkours
around the house. Zach, the black cat, turns his nose up at tuna and
treats (Seriously. He’s weird).
Did
you have a favorite pet while growing up? Mine was a cat named Dusty
and a German Shepard named Brin Hilda (Brinnie).
I
will always have a pet (don’t tell my hubby lol). I love cuddling
with them, having companionship, and, of course, the unconditional
love.
