When the story keeps going…
By Jacqueline Paige
Sitting down and writing a story isn’t a difficult task for me. The hard thing for me (and I blame my muse) is to stop after one. More often than not I sit down to write a single story with great characters and then find out about half-way through that it’s going to have to a be series or at the very least a trilogy.
When your secondary characters bring more to the plot than you intend, you are automatically obligated to write their story as well. This is what happened when I was writing Heart. When I met Calum, his character was so intriguing I knew there would be an entire book for him and then halfway through Gage and Kelsey’s story popped out at me. Of course while I was writing Scent and then Passion, more of the characters had to have their own books…
I planned ONE book, it turned into a trilogy—and then kept going… now it’s a series. Sitting in a binder of notes are characters and ideas for Book 6 and I’m sure by the time I’m finished writing book 5, there will be ideas for number 7…
Of course when you realize you have the potential for a series, you need at least one thing that connects them. Not only did I find one thing to connect them, but I now have several threads I need to follow.
This has not just happened with the Animal books, The Huntress (J. Risk book) was a solo story and before I knew what was happening I had the potential for NINE books…which has now turned into spinoff series from the series… (because I don’t need to sleep—ever…)
As tiring as it is when the characters make the story continue, it’s more than worth it. I can’t wait to see where they take me.
Thanks for having the series here today :)
