GUEST POST

How to find time to write as a parent?

I know of many writers who work a full-time job and can only write in their spare time. But with kids, their spare time is often minimal or even nonexistent.

As the mother of a toddler, I know this dilemma all too well. Today, I am going to share three ways that I was able to get some writing time in while working a full-time job and raising a three-year-old.

Write while they sleep

I am no stranger to getting up early in order to get some writing time in. My alarm clock goes off at 5am (and I snooze until 5:30 because, let’s face it, I’m totally not a morning person), and I get as much writing done as I can until 6:30, when it’s time for me to get ready for work.

I’m blessed that my husband and I currently work opposite shifts so I don’t need to wake my son up to take him anywhere, but when I had to take him to the babysitter as a baby, I’d have to wrap up my writing at 6am in order to get him up and ready, too. It was less time to write, but a half-hour is better than nothing.

I also get in as much writing as I can in between the time I put my son down for bed at night and my own bedtime. Every little bit counts.

Write while they’re occupied

Homework time is also a great time to sneak in some words. At around 7pm, my son plays ABC Mouse (early learning for kids) for a half hour. I sit him next to me on the couch in case he needs help (and to listen in when he’s not doing what the game asks of him), and I set up my laptop and type away.

I also get in as much words as I can when I plug in a movie that my son wants to watch (as long as I don’t get sucked in to watching it as well!).

Have someone watch them

On the weekend my husband is home, so I sneak away for a few hours. Sometimes my son even spends the night at his grandparents, which gives me a little more time to write.

I also hire a babysitter once a week for a couple of hours, to sneak myself off to a coffee shop (or Panera Bread) to get some uninterrupted writing in.

All in all, these three things have helped me find time to write as a parent, even if it’s just for a few minutes at a time. Let me know if you try any of these for yourself!
