Top 10 Favorite Books/authors
Oh, how to choose a top ten anything but books and authors especially? I’ve been reading voraciously and rabidly since I could open a book, but…since you asked. *sigh* Here’s my list, in no particular order, because that really would be cruel.
The Three Fates, The Search, and Three Sisters Island Trilogy by Nora Roberts. Normally I’d have gone with Partners, the first Silhouette Intimate Moments (the first romance) I ever read, but these books are, hands down, my favorites of hers. Nora is why I fell in love with romance and it’s why I write it. End of story.
The Stand and Carrie by Stephen King. Carrie was my foray into adult books and I was nine (did I mention my mother NEVER said no to me when it came to books? Best gift she ever could have given me). The Stand, however, I truly believe, is his best work and it my favorite of his. The characters, the themes, the story…it’s just perfection (and yes, I read the unabridged version). With the new mini series coming out, it’s probably time to read it again.
The
Watchers by Dean Koontz. What do you get if you combine Stephen
King and Nora Roberts? Dean Koontz. For me, I don’t think there’s
a male author other than Koontz who writes romance this well and he
does it in a framework of psychological horror. This book, with
Einstein the Golden Retriever is just unadulterated pleasure from the
opening page. It’s also scary in spots (but don’t worry! The dogs
are fine!).
Night Play
by Sherrilyn Kenyon. I love the Dark Hunter series. Well, the ones
I’ve read. I think I’m about a dozen books behind at this point,
but Night Play was, by far, my favorite. A plus-size heroine and an
absolute to die for hero and a love scene that will make you never
look at a dressing room the same way…it’s just paranormal
excellence.
Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston. I didn’t read this until I was in college, but it had a huge impact on me. I don’t think I’ve ever appreciated the beauty of language until this book. The characters, the setting, the emotion. It’s all there and this book was written decades ago. I remember being angry I hadn’t been introduced to this book or this author sooner, but I’m so glad I was. It’s one I read at least once a year, if only to remind myself the power of words.
The In
Death Series by JD Robb (aka: Nora Roberts). Yeah, a bit of a
cheat, especially since we are now at over 50 books in the series,
but for me, there is no other series, no other author that I will
drop everything for to read the book the day it comes out. Naked in
Death has to be one of the best first books of a series that I’ve
read to this day. It hooked me in with the characters, the world, and
the unabashed commentary and brutal analysis of the human condition.
Eve Dallas is, hands down for me, one of the best literary creations
we’ve seen. She’s flawed, but vulnerable and when she loves, it
is with her entire being. Her and Roarke together (especially if
they’re with Bella, their goddaughter), uh. My heart just melts.
So…my top
ten is more like my top sixty-three, LOL. But there you go! Anyone
wanting to read this list, it should take up plenty of your time.
Thanks for letting me play!
